As Information Technology has advanced from mainframes to minicomputers to PCs to the World Wide Web, Mining Industry is also absorbing state-of-art technology in its operations. The constantly increasing portfolio of computer applications in Mining industry includes analyzing and mapping exploration data, estimation of ore reserves, designing mines, planning production, controlling processes, maintaining equipment, managing human resources, supplies, inventories and all types of financial information.

Metals & Mining companies must integrate multiple sites, often in very remote locations, into one standardized information system providing headquarters with access to real-time data from across the enterprise. To stay competitive in a regulatory environment, companies must empower their people with real time data to optimize mining and metallurgical extraction and production processes, and to streamline and document regulatory compliance efforts.

The need of the hour was an end to end accountability of the Mineral Movement by plugging in new rules on the Lessee & Licensee. It was required to open all transactions of Minerals from Mines to the citizen for transparency. Also a standard operating procedure for all Government officers concerned with Mineral of the State was required to avoid delay & favoritism. All this was met with the inclusion of IT. Through this project, the objective was to check and prevent the siphoning of minerals into wrong hands and enhance the tax collecting process of the state. This required automation of the manual process for collecting taxes.

A web based application was developed by which the Transit Permit & Transit Pass is applied and issued online. The Lessee can only transport the permitted quantity of Mineral. The Weighbridge operator and check gate operator update each and every transaction. The system re-consolidates the transaction and generates different kind of MIS report, which helps the Directorate of Mines to take intelligent decisions while collecting taxes for this kind of application Internet connectivity posed to be a major problem in the hilly terrains of the mining areas. Therefore, CUG towers were set up and 24 hrs connectivity was established. Routes were modified to minimize the possibilities of misuse of ore and maximize the cross-check opportunities.
